Product Details

**Baju Bakau **is an elegant pullover (or tunic) finished with slightly flaring lacy bottom and cuffs, the same lovely lace motif as in the Bakau and Serangoon Shawls. The fit is tailored yet relaxed.

You’ll knit with Åsa Tricosa's Ziggurat Top-Down Tricnique (inspired by Tuulia’s Tailored Sweater Method but knitted in one go):

  • From here you knit everything from top to bottom with some little zigging and zagging, producing nicely tailored shoulders, a curved neckline, and a slightly fitted body with some ease.
  • The set in sleeves are also knitted top down and in the round.
  • A lacy collar band is knitted on last.
  • Not a seam in sight. No joining of pieces.
  • There is (optional) bust and waist shaping which hints at curves but does not cling.

The name is a fond nod to Singapore where Baju Bakau was thought up (as were the Bakau and Serangoon shawls). Bajuis Malay for long-sleeved shirt, Bakau is a mangrove – the lace arches are a little like arching mangrove roots.
