Product Details

Braiding Sweetgrass is inspired by Native American Robin Wall Kimmerer's book of the same name. In it, she describes the tradition of dividing a sheaf of sweetgrass into threes and braiding it for use in basket-making. Braiding Sweetgrass socks are a classic design with three panels of lace, in which intertwined strands of yarn simulate the braided strands of grass.

The pattern is written for use with four double-pointed needles; however two circular needles or Magic Loop can also be used. Socks are knitted from the cuff down and feature stockinette, two simple lace patterns, round heel and wedge toe. The Kitchener stitch is used to seam the toe.

The skill level is suited to an intermediate level knitter familiar with basic sock construction.

The yarn used is Kismet Fiber Works Simple Sock in the colorway Larc's Song. Other fingering weight yarn may be used.

Other materials: tapestry needle

Gauge: 36 sts over 4" in the round in stockinette.
