THIS IS A LOOP YARN FINGER-KNITTING PATTERN. Irish Aran knitting patterns have a long and rich history, originating in the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Most commonly seen in sweaters, I have replicated those patterns here in blanket form. The Irish Aran Cabled Trellis Blanket design is a mixed pattern of chain cable, trellis and four-strand cabled braid. Each pattern within an Irish Aran knit design holds meaning: the trellis pattern is said to symbolize the stone-walled fields of the Northwestern farming communities, and is also a symbol of protection. This pattern is also known as lattice or basket stitch, and can also represent the fisherman's basket and good luck. Cables represent fishermen's ropes, safety and good fortune.
