I am an experienced knitter and would not have bought this or any other pattern by this designer had I realised the low level of presentation. The glaring mistake in the cable of the jumper on the front cover of the pattern and the number of pages (16) would normally have distracted me but my focus was on finding specific patterns for a baby boy so I missed it. For obvious reasons, there is no insight/preview into how downloadable patterns are written/presented, therefore there are bound to be disappointments such as mine regarding this pattern. My dissatisfaction and disappointment with this pattern is as follows. The creation and inclusion of appropriate compact tables of measurements and required materials for all sizes should be present and clear at a glance rather than the disjointed, long-winded way it is shown. Elastic for the waistband has been omitted from materials needed. A table of abbreviations and accurate description of their meaning is all that is needed rather than step-by-step photographs of knitting on a needle with instructions of “how to do”. A set of three photographs with text instruction is shown for each of the three separate size pattern instructions to which they refer. Four photographs with instruction are given for cable and several others likewise throughout the pattern all unnecessarily contributing to the total 16 pages which besides paper, also require printer ink. Abbreviation ssk is translated as “slip, slip, knit (decrease)” which inaccurately omits the decrease element. Whilst brackets are used in part, there are many areas of the sweater pattern that could be simplified/joined-up such as all size variations being in brackets instead of separate blocks of pattern instruction for every two sizes, and using brackets for numbers of repeat set-stitches/rows, again reducing the length of the pattern. £6.07 for what turns out to be a basic simple pattern is extortionate. The Berta Knit Store’s large curly leafy trademark in every corner of every page, photographs of basic knitting skills rather than the use of a table of established explanatory abbreviations, and the inconsistent use of brackets all contribute to this pattern’s 16 pages when, in my estimation, it could have been produced in 3 or 4 pages maximum, including the front cover picture. I have knit the pants with modification as follows. Three cables on the outer sides of the legs and body were making them too narrow for baby and nappy so I undid it and knit just the centre cable converting the unused cable stitches to stocking stitch alongside those already set for the legs and body. This gave the finished garment a more relaxed style. I’m afraid I cannot face knitting the sweater from this laborious pattern and will not be purchasing Berta Knit Store (Teresa Costa) patterns in future.
