The vertical ribbed pattern allows for size flexibility. If the sweater is left to fall softly, it will expand between the ribs to fit a range within a size. So, for instance, size 34-36 measures between 37 and 40 inches, depending on how much it is opened out. But, even the 40 inch width doesn't stretch it too far and spoil its looks.
