The Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and Arizona were very proficient in making useful and beautiful pottery.  These placemats depict the so-called Wedding Vase and an olla or jar.  The two-spouted jar was probably used to hold water for ease of drinking, but was dubbed the Wedding Vase by tourists and sold better with this designation.  The beautiful black ware is obtained by firing the pottery while covered in dung.

Maria Martinez who is famous for the carved black ware was from San Ildefonso Pueblo. The carved black pots we have by Christina Naranjo are from the Santa Clara Pueblo.  She is featured in the "Seven Families in Pueblo Pottery."  Her picture is shown and she states she regularly utilizes the carved Avanyu or water serpent.
