This hat wouldn’t have existed 10 years ago, but now STEAM is something we should know about and celebrate. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Architecture & Math (STEAM) are at the heart of this hat. These subjects are the future. I was a programmer when “girls who code” didn’t exist. My son works in the software industry and my daughter is a chemical engineer. STEAM is the big in our lives! So knit some rockets, musical notes, computer screens, houses, bluetooth symbols, DNA helixes, microscopes & a little slice of Pi and celebrate the movement. Two versions provided for those who want a train-free hat! Charts are slightly different for each size. All elements are in each chart. Steam has been lowered for ease of stranding.
So get on the S.T.E.A.M. Train and S.T.E.A.M. Train! It’s taking us to the future… Remember, the name of the hat doesn’t isn’t an adjective and a noun, but a noun and a verb! Three sizes: Child, Adult & Large Adult.

What is Being Made
The S.T.E.A.M. Hat is a knitted beanie celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Architecture, and Math. Designed by Lisa McFetridge and published in 2019, this hat features decorative motifs including rockets, musical notes, computer screens, houses, Bluetooth symbols, DNA helixes, microscopes, and a slice of Pi. The design comes in three sizes: Child, Adult, and an additional size option, making it suitable for various ages and head measurements.
Design Variations
Two distinct versions are provided in the pattern: one featuring the full S.T.E.A.M. Train design with all thematic elements, and an alternative version for those preferring a train-free hat. Both versions incorporate the same celebratory STEAM subject matter, allowing knitters to choose their preferred aesthetic while maintaining the educational theme.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs stranded colorwork techniques to create the detailed motifs. The pattern incorporates charted colorwork, with charts provided for each size. The designer has strategically lowered the STEAM elements within the charts to ease the stranding process, making the colorwork more manageable for intermediate knitters. This approach allows for smooth transitions between color changes while maintaining pattern clarity across all three sizes.
Stitches and Construction
The hat is constructed using standard knitting stitches worked in the round, typical of beanie construction. The colorwork elements are integrated through charted patterns that guide stitch placement and color changes. All thematic elements—rockets, musical notes, computer screens, houses, Bluetooth symbols, DNA helixes, microscopes, and Pi—are incorporated into each size's chart, ensuring consistent design representation regardless of hat dimensions.
Materials
- Yarn Weight: Worsted weight yarn in multiple colors to accommodate the stranded colorwork design
- Needles: Circular needles and/or double-pointed needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn and small circumference knitting in the round
