I’m a zoo volunteer who loves hats, so I started knitting hats featuring our zoo’s amazing animals. This one has 5 penguins marching in a circular parade, with 3 different heads (species) to choose from.
The adult size hat is a simple watch cap. The penguins are embroidered with duplicate stitch, also called Swiss darning. I love the depth provided by this technique.
I’ve also designed hats with other zoo animals, knit several dozen, and all (except for the ones I wear) were donated to the local zoo keeper’s annual fundraiser or given to other volunteers. This is the first one in this series I’ve put into a pattern.
The hats are knit in Red Heart Super Saver yarn. I chose this because it’s readily available, has a massive color selection, is inexpensive, easy care, and doesn't have the allergy restrictions of wool. All are important when knitting for gifts and non-profit organizations. Other similar weight yarns can be substituted.
