      I used a foundation chain of 35 chains because I wanted to make it bigger. It didn't end up bigger, probably because I crochet tightly. I am ambivalent about the chain-4 loops--I think it would have been fine to have a 2-3 chain loop. With a thick yarn, it was good to have the chain stitches/skip a stitch between the sc's so it didn't end up being so dense.
