Stitch and colour guide
You can use this stitch and colour guide for both the Valentines and Galentines projects. Print it out and keep it on hand (along with the template) while you're working.
Valentine's Day embroidery hoop step-by-step
1
If you're going to back your hoop with felt, trace around the outside of the internal hoop and put to one side. This will be the template for the backing.
2
Prepare the 15cm embroidery hoop and transfer the template onto the fabric using the heat erasable pen.
3
Starting with the cursive text, work split stitch in Pure Black (1) with 2 strands of thread. Where the text is bolder on one side, sew a second row of split stitch to make the text bolder. For the smaller block text work back stitch in smaller stitches.
4
Next, using 2 strands of Pure Black (1) work back stitch to embroider the arms onto the hearts leave the faces until they have been filled.
5
Using Lipstick Pink (37), outline the heart with split stitch using 3 strands of thread. Once complete fill the shape with long and short stitch. Complete both hearts.
6
Using Wine (159), fill the heart with split stitch using 3 strands of thread. Start from the outline and work your way round the shape to the centre. Complete both hearts.
7
Using Pomegranate (18), outline the heart with split stitch using 3 strands of thread. Once complete fill in with long and short stitch. Complete both hearts.
8
Using Blossom (50), fill the heart with split stitch using 3 strands of thread. Start from the outline and work your way around to the centre. Complete both hearts.
9
Now all your hearts are filled, take 2 strands of thread in Pure Black (1). Add the facial expressions using French knots (2 wraps), straight stitch or back stitch depending on the heart.
10
Moving onto the stars, outline the shapes in Mustard Yellow (11) working straight stitch. Use 3 strands of thread.
11
Fill in the stars using 3 strands of Woolly Brown (72). Start in the centre of the start and fan out working satin stitch.
12
Lastly, using 3 strands of Woolly Brown (72) add in your French knots clusters, wrapping round the needle twice.
13
To remove your template, run a warm hairdryer over it. Repeat until all the lines have been removed.
14
Trim off any excess fabric around the hoop, leaving around 2cm.
15
Using your cotton thread, use running stitch to gather all the fabric at the back of the embroidery hoop and tie off.
16
Cut out your felt backing and secure your felt in place using blanket stitch.
