    About

I ended up quite liking how this turned out, BUT this pattern has problems. There are a couple of glaring errors and whoever knit the sample shown in the photo in the pattern didn't follow the pattern instructions. This threw me off for a while because I stared and stared at the photo, then read the instructions and stared at the diagrams, then decided to just use my own judgment. If you decide to make this, be prepared for inconsistencies. (Specifically, the worst error is that the cable pattern repeat is NOT 10 rows. It is 8 rows. Rows one and two are just setup.

I like the neck shaping a lot, but after following the instructions, it was wavy and misshapen, so I redid it with my own modifications. The # of sts to pick up for the neck band was spot on, but I did some decreases around the front neck edge on the final rows and then it laid flat.

I made the smallest size, but with heavier yarn than called for in the pattern.

Lastly, your cardigan looks lovely and gives no hint of the problems you had

      Buttons and buttonholes:-
When knitting the buttonhole band you make 7, 8, 9 or 10 holes. But when you add the neck edging you make another buttonhole, thus you need 8, 9, 10 or 11 buttons.
Sorry to disagree with some of your comments, but I agree that the tester knitter didn't follow the pattern properly and that the neck edging instructions are in the wrong order!

Hi Beth. The photo shows 7 buttons. And it is not the smallest size (I counted the trellis cable repeats and there are more repeats than my cardigan which was the smallest size.). Even if it was the smallest size - according to the pattern there should be 8 buttons. So the test knitter also used his own judgment and ignored the buttonhole placement in the instructions just as I did. I placed the buttonholes 8 sts apart in the 2-stitch 'purl' area of the 2 x 2 buttonhole band ribbing. This looked good and the buttons were perfectly spaced when the final buttonhole was added for the neck band for a total of 6 buttonholes. Happy knitting.

@Christine L: Yes, I agree that there were several things wrong with the photoed garment relative to the written pattern, but you can't say someone else's written pattern is wrong, just because you don't like the end results. I agree an 8-row repeat gives a better look, but the 10-row pattern DOES give a lattice with all the cables crossing correctly.
Personally, I would have started the pattern repeat at row 5 on their chart, I think that would have given a neater start.

I have this pattern too. I did a small sample of the front cabling to see if I liked it. I had no problems with the instructions and charts (apart from the charts being so small). but won't be knitting it any time soon as I found the constant cabling too footery.

Beautiful cardigan Christine, such a pity it caused you so many problems, after reading all the posts, I think you deserve a medal having completed the cardigan. It is such a lovely cardigan and the colour you have knitted it in is just beautiful. 😊

Thank you, Alison. This is perhaps the most sloppily written pattern I have ever encountered, and there seems to have been no editing either. The photo clearly shows 7 buttons and yet the instructions state that you will need 8, 9, 10 or 11 buttons. The cable diagrams show that the repeat for the ribbed cable and lattice cable are the same, and yet the photo shows an 8-stitch repeat for the lattice cable and a 10-stitch repeat for the ribbed cable. Yes, I counted the stitches in the photo. The diagrams and instructions make no mention of set-up rows. The photo shows cables leaning the wrong way, which, in retrospect, I should have done - then the legs of the cable would have lined up better with the hem ribbing. It goes on and on.

Stunning cardigan Christine. Shame about the pattern errors but you used your good judgment and it certainly paid off 😉 💓

Thank you, Linzi. I'm still a tad bit annoyed about the errors. Here's a sample verbatim:
Neck Edging With smaller ndl nd RS facing, pick up and knit 6 sts along top of Buttonhole Band, 3 (4, 6, 7) sts along Right Neck bind off, 24 sts along Left Front Neck, 2 (4, 4, 6) sts along top of Right Sleeve, 20 (22, 22, 24) sts along Back Neck, 2 (4, 4, 6) sts along top of Left Sleeve, 24 sts along Right Front Nec,, 3 (4, 6, 7) sts along Left Neck bind off, and 6 sts along top of Buttonband.

@Christine L: sounds all over the place 😕. I guess all you can do is laugh. Maybe it was a test and you were the clever one 😉

Thank you, Jane. It was frustrating, but in such a tiny size, the rework is not too bad. And the Cloudborn yarn has such a wonderful feel to it as you're knitting, so that kept me going.

Well it was well worth the effort of sorting the pattern it looks beautiful with the cables all over the front.
It is so frustrating when the errors are so obvious, it is so upsetting when you have knitted so much of the project.

Thank you, Mary. I had never done a lattice cable before and it turned out to be easy. It makes the front really cushiony and thick. But I never did get all the problems sorted out. On the left front, couldn't figure out how to get the legs of the lattice cable to line up with the ribbing at the hem. Redid 3 times, then gave up. Right front was no problem.

Ohh that is so disappointing when the pattern isn't correct Christine, I know when I am following a pattern I always think oh it must be me that's doing it wrong. You would have spent so much time working it out, but it looks beautiful and you must be so happy with it.😊😊

Thank you, Michelle I am happy with it. It doesn't help that I'm somewhat dyslexic, and ambidexterous to boot, so left-leaning cable, right-leaning cable, oh no. left right, aacck! help!
