You can use 500m – 800m of any DK yarn or yarn weight of your choice and matching hook. Pattern testers used fingering weight and DK weight yarn with beautiful results
In US crochet terms with UK translations given Shawl starts at one end. Working in rows,increasing on one side only, until desired size is reached. Gauge is not important. To achieve a light drape tension, I suggest you use a hook one size larger than recommended for the yarn you have chosen. Make a swatch of the first 8 rows to test your hook size.
