The speckled yarn craze has dominated socks and shawls, but I found myself wondering—what about sweaters? It seemed like the only way to use one of those splashy yarns for a garment was to knit a very plain sweater, or else run the risk of a muddled mess of colors and stitch patterns. So I set out to design a sweater that would be fun to knit, incorporating stitch patterns that worked with the speckles, rather than competing with them. Cellophane Flowers features bold chunky cables that stand out against the color variations in the yarn, and squishy Fisherman’s Rib that holds its own against all-over speckling. Worked from the bottom up, this drop-shoulder open-front cardigan eliminates the fuss of buttons, waist shaping and setting in sleeves, but still challenges the knitter with a cozy shawl collar and POCKETS! You’ll be reaching for it year after year when sweater weather arrives.
