The lace pattern is optimized for working in the round (Japanese lace sometimes looks wonky in the round, but no worries--I've worked it all out for you). Even better--the pattern is both charted and written out with line-by-line directions, so you're covered no matter what! The pattern is accentuated by the gentle shifts in color, but it may also be worked in a single color yarn, with a different effect.
