Earthshine can be seen when light from the Earth is reflected on the darker portion of the moon. Best viewed at dusk or dawn, the unlit or darker portion of the moon is faintly lit. Just as the full moon shines upon Earth, a full Earth shines back upon the moon and lights up its lunarscape. It exemplifies the cycle of reflection and release. The Earthshine Hat is the perfect companion to the Earthshine Meditation Cow, and features the same meditative qualities and a single column of elongated caliper cables.
Just like the cowl, this easy-to-memorize pattern can be approached as a meditative exercise. Once you are familiar with the pattern, your mind is free to reflect, while your hands work the caliper cables and twisted stitches. Near the end of your knitting journey, you will be asked to let go of and release specific purl stitches that will complete the design and give the hat its distinctive look.
