Need a pretty present fast? The smocking looks like a fancy cable stitch, even though it's very simple. This lovely hat can be produced by a fast knitter in just over 1 hour, or about 2.5 hours for a slower knitter.
The ribbing in Grateful elongates the stitches, making the circumference stretchy and the overall length longer than the other hats. With an all over, repeatable pattern you can easily memorize, you can whip up one of these hats in about 2 hours, which is why this pattern was originally published (in one size only) as the 2 Hour Smocked Toque. Choose a size with 4-6” (10-15cm) negative ease.
Materials: 1-2 skeins Malabrigo Rasta
Tools: 8 mm (US 11) 40 cm (16 inch) circular knitting needle, 10 mm (US 15) 40 cm (16 inch) circular knitting needle (or size needed to obtain gauge); tapestry needle
Gauge: 10 st in a 4 inch sample, worked in pattern when using larger needles yields a small to medium size adult hat.
