Hawserlaid was designed for the Quince and Co. Scarves etc. 2014 collection
This shawl/scarf is knitted sideways from tip to tip, using 1/2 of your yarn as you knit to the centre increasing as you go, then you start decreasing and work to the opposite tip.
‘Laid’ is the traditional term for twist in rope and string construction and ‘hawser’ refers to the three strands, so a hawser-laid rope is a three-strand twisted rope. The 3x3 traveling or twisted rib stitch imitates the texture and appearance of heavy string or rope. You will see your knitting take on this characteristic more and more as you knit. You can then decide how much you want to block this out once you’re done.
