Illustriation appears to have several shades of grey but only uses four different yarns. Anyone looking straight at the shawl will see wide bands of colour which are made up of narrow stripes. As the wearer turns a checkerboard effect comes in and out of view. The viewer will see something different from every angle.
In case you have never done illusion knitting, the pattern includes a sample square for practice befoe you begin. The technique is very easy. It is just like knitting stripes.
