We were picnicking on a crisp September day in Vermont, and a gorgeous maple leaf drifted onto our picnic blanket. The vibrant colors inspired this hat. This pattern could be used to highlight any beautiful handpainted or variegated yarn. If you use a fingering yarn (I used about 120yds of handpainted Trekking XXL) for the leaves, you'll need to use two strands held together. This hat has a lined ear band for warmth. The lining can be done in a coordinating color, using about 100 yds of either non-itchy acrylic (my kids would never wear wool on their foreheads), or you can use the same wool as the body of the hat. The hat has two knitted-in twined herringbone braids. There is a chart for the leaf design.
