I just love capes on babies (well, on anyone, but especially babies)- so easy to layer over other pieces, and no struggling to get arms into sleeves! Also, you don't need to know exactly what size the baby is (or is going to turn out to be!) if you're gift knitting (or knitting in anticipation!) I used an inexpensive, very washable yarn, but a luxury yarn would be lovely, especially for a special occasion!
One size hooded cape fits baby for a surprising amount of time, from wrist length to elbow to shoulder cape and everything in between. Moss stitch edges with a tie closure; cables or lace- your choice!- highlight the raglan shaping lines. Knit from top down.
