I'm a huge fan of 1940s knitwear. It was a time of practical, stylish and thrifty designs, often incorporating stranded colour work, and frequently utilising stitch property and varying needle sizes to create shape in garments. These mittens are based on this iconic knitwear era using two colours of 4ply yarn and the stranded colour-work technique. They are knitted flat from a colour knitting chart, and then seamed. A ribbed top is used to hug the fingers, and an after thought thumb is picked up and ribbed in the round during the finishing stage. The result is a cosy and stylish adult mitten which uses only a small amount of 4ply yarn in each colour (less than 50g/190m in the yarns used in the pattern) and is perfect for stash busting.
