I’ve always loved the idea of using multiple strands of yarn to create a gradient effect. Lace weight is perfect for this because you can use 3 strands together, without creating a fabric that is too thick. You can choose any two colors you like, although keep in mind that the transition will be smoother if they are similar in tone and value. By changing one strand at a time, you will smoothly change from one color to the other. Also, by slipping 1 strand of the working yarn, some nice texture is added to what would otherwise be plain stockinette. Using a basic chevron stitch, a gently wavy border finishes the shawl!

To prepare for knitting, the skeins need to be split in a very specific way. To facilitate this, you will want a scale to measure the weight of the balls as you wind them.

The pattern was written specifically to use the [Madelinetosh Prairie Short Skeins][1], available from Jimmy Beans Wool.
