These mittens feature the Chinese characters for "snowflake" (literally, snow flower) and "frost", while the character for "crystal" is repeated around the cuff. The palm's design, mirrored on opposing hands, brings to mind swinging bead curtains, and continues around the thumb.
Mittens are knit from light fingering weight wool and have a thumb gusset located slightly towards the palm for a better fit. The fine gauge (of 38 stitches and 42 rows to 4" in stranded colourwork) makes the mittens sized for ladies' medium (7 - 1/2 inch palm circumference), but using a slightly heavier weight should easily allow for larger sizes.
Did you know: the Chinese character for "snow" combines the characters for "rain" and "broom" . . . snow is rain that requires sweeping!
