I wanted a scarf for my little girl which was chunky enough around her neck that it didn’t need to be tight to be warm, long enough to knot in place, short enough not to dangle in her way as she played. And here it is!

Any worsted weight or aran weight yarn will do keeping in mind that you are knitting to a measurement: simply knit as many stitches as you need to achieve your width and keep knitting to length.
