This saddle shouldered Aran tunic takes its name from the ancient Celtic story of star crossed lovers Deirdre and Naoise who fell in love and eloped even though she was betrothed to the King. They were pursued and then at last lured back home with promises of forgiveness. The treacherous King then had Naoise killed so he could have the beautiful Deirdre for his own. According to legend after Deirdre's death she was buried near Naoise and yew trees sprang up from their graves, their branches intertwining as they grew. The intertwined cable pattern at the focus of this sweater reminds me of those branches binding them together throughout time. The sweater is a loose fitting tunic style with no bottom cuff. A delicate braid accents the cuffs of the saddle shoulder sleeves and neckline. Skills needed include cabling, picking up stitches, seaming. The patten is charted. Row by row directions are provided for each of the charts. The sleeve and collar bands are worked as applied edgings.
