These top-down socks were inspired by an episode of the TV programme “Ice Road Truckers” in which one of the drivers made a journey to a remote village that could only be reached by driving along a frozen river. A garter stitch “river” winds its way between banks made using simple increases and decreases as it flows down the sock from the cuff towards the toe. A gusset is included to increase the depth of the short-row heel, formed using German short-rows (although you could substitute the short row method of your choice).

The pattern is based on a stitch tension of 9 sts per inch (2.5cm) worked in stocking stitch.

You will need up to 400 yards of fingering weight sock yarn, 2mm (US 0) knitting needles for working in the round, or size needed to achieve pattern tension.  6 stitch markers  Darning needle
