Iridis is the Latin word for Rainbow. These mitts are wonderfully fun and colourful, great to brighten up a gloomy, cold day. The thumb is uniquely highlighted with a single knit stitch border around a purled gusset. Coloured purl ridges also add a lovely texture to the body of the mitt.
The mitts pictured were knit using 8 different colours – white and the 7 colours of the rainbow – but would look equally lovely using a solid main colour and a self striping yarn for the contrast, or even just 2 different colours. As you only need 150m or so of yarn, it’s a great way to use up all of your lovely scraps.
This pattern is suitable for a confident beginner upwards. The only special skills required are the purlside increase, casting on mid round (after the thumb stitches are held), and picking up the stitches for the thumb. Each of these are covered in the written instructions and there are links to helpful tutorials.
