This shawl is dedicated to my mother, who, besides often being a strong opposition to my own beliefs (which taught me more about life than constant agreement could ever do), also planted the love for Louis Armstrong into my heart. Who would have thought?
As I write these lines, it is the anniversary of your funeral. Louis Armstrong’s “Saint James Infirmary” was with you on your last journey. Today I can listen to him again without pain. I’m ready to let you go. Mother, I am grateful for all that you taught me and most of all for this beautiful life that you gifted to me. I knitted this shawl when it became clear that you would leave us.
Difficulty level: advanced beginner (basic top-down shawl construction, knit and purl, knitted cast on)
Yarn: ONline Supersocke 4-ply Paint Color (75% wool, 25% nylon, 420m/100g; 459yds/3.53oz), 2 balls. Sample used 680m (744yds).
Needles: 4mm/US 6 circular needles
Gauge: 20 stitches/32 rows in stockinette stitch = 10cm/4in.
