Gauge of the square may change according to the yarn you use. If you will use your scrap yarns (I consider the granny square a stash-buster) make sure they are of the same weight (worsted or sports yarn).
To make the sides of the bag and handle, you will need more than a skein of yarn or about 450 yards at the most. I suggest Red Heart super saver, it makes the tote sturdy or non-collapsing.
