Mystic Air

This square shawl is the fourth shawl in the Mystic Elements series (following Mystic Waters, Mystic Light and Mystic Earth). Mystic Air draws its inspiration from the heavens above and the air that we breathe.

When designing Mystic Air, I was considering different ways in which to create a square shawl. And then I decided to combine several of them.

In this shawl, first the center portion is knit as a straight square. Stitches are then picked up around the outside of the square, and the section with all the drops is worked in the round. Finally, the border is worked as a knit-on edging. This way, the knit rows are going in many different directions. Construction-wise, it’s a fairly com- plex design, and it combines many different techniques, but following the pattern is not particularly difficult.

My shawl is knit on 3.5 mm needles, using two skeins (200 g) of Alpaca Cashsilk yarn from Tri'Coterie (1,200 m per 100 g skein) in the Bella Swan colourway. The shawl uses approx
