St Kentigern (more commonly known as St Mungo) is the patron saint of the city of Glasgow. He is supposed to have performed four miracles in the city, which are commemorated in a traditional rhyme and in the city’s coat of arms:
Here’s the bird that never flew, Here’s the tree that never grew, Here’s the bell that never rang, Here’s the fish that never swam.
The Kentigern Shawl is a circular or semi-circular shawl incorporating lace patterns representing each of the miracles. The edging is knitted on after the main body of the shawl is complete. Charts and full written instructions are included.
