The Ndebele Women of South Africa carry on a long-standing tradition of painting the walls of their homes with large, graphic designs. Long ago they were painted with natural materials: soot & limestone, black & white. Today the houses are painted in bright colors using commercial paint and thick, dark outlines. The geometric designs tell the passersby what is happening in their family; marriages, births etc... they also say “we are Ndebele.” The designs are amazing and are mostly straight lines, squares & triangles - and always designed, drawn (freehand) and painted by women. Amazing skills.
This hat honors the Ndebele house painting tradition. Color choices are yours, traditional black and white or modern with bright red, sky blue, gold, green, white and black and a surprise
