Why wrap them in cotton wool when you can wrap them in silk and merino or cashmere?
This hat is designed for aran weight yarn and can be knit flat or partially in the round. It can be knit in one or two colours (the two colour version is a more intermediate knit, particularly if you want to avoid lots of ends). My samples are knit in luxury yarns (red is silk/merino, grey 100% cashmere with a wool contrast yarn) for which substitutes are listed. I've also added acrylic and mixed fibre alternatives for those on a budget, or who want ease of washing; test projects were successfully made in this fibre. You need very little yarn for the contrast colour, if working in two colours with just the main stitch in a contrast colour allow 20m/yds of contrast yarn (quantities required assume a one colour version)
