I bought this yarn for another project but when my mother saw the new Highland Heathers yarn from Stylecraft, she asked me if I could knit her a hat. And so the hat was knitted...
I’m happy to help Jeanette, and the answer is no, I didn’t use the 4.5 mm needles for the fair isle section. I did the ribbing with 3.25 mm and then changed to 4 mm needles and continued with the 4 mm until the end.
I sometimes go half size up with the fair isle sections, but not in this one because I already thought the hat was going to be quite big.
You can see in the photo that the fair isle section is pulling a little but this also helps to keep the hat in its place.
Thankyou so much for the advice Maria 😊 Think I will knit it flat as it will be my first attempt at fairisle.
My daughter is in her 30’s now (where does the time go) 😂
This is a lovely pressie. It looks like it might be a good start for fairisle, might give it a go for my daughter.
How many stitches would you recommend reducing Maria?
Hi Jeanette,
For a Toddler hat in DK weight yarn, a standard number of stitches would be 102 sts. For a child, it would be 108 sts.
If you alter the number of stitches, take care with the fair isle section.
I knitted the hat in the round, supressing 1 stitch of the pattern.
When you knit this flat, the fair isle will be obvious on the right side, but the wrong side could not match because of the alterations.
Just check on the right side after some stitches, to see if the pattern is correct. You can always adjust this easily.
Also, if you want to follow this pattern, you will have to adjust the number of stitches so that when you get to the crown decreases, you have a multiple of 10.
Hope this helps 😀
Hi again!
Because of your profile photo, I assumed your daughter was the little girl in the picture. I then read your profile, and see that your daughter is not a child anymore! 😉
Anyway, the hat is a bit large, so I would recommend to begin with around 115 stitches.
