You could use any 4 or 5 ply yarn for this project, but I'd recommend one with some cotton content, especially for the coasters so that they are more absorbent. Of course, this is not as crucial for the mug cosy! Two balls of the Scheepjes Stonewashed yarn is enough to make two cosies and six coasters.
The technique used for this set is tapestry crochet, so the yarn not in use is stitched over by the yarn in use.
