I’ve named this scarf after a distant cousin , Ellen Cantelo , who was one of three women on the Isle of Wight who signed the 1866 Women’s Suffrage Petition to Parliament in Great Britain requesting suffrage (votes ) for women . This was the first mass votes for women petition submitted to parliament . Ellen Cantelo has a room named after her at the Isle of Wight Women’s Centre in Newport on the Isle of Wight and there are also some of her water colour paintings in Carisbrooke Castle Museum .
