One skein of yarn should make both pieces, though if you plan on making both the hat and cowl and are not sure if you'll have enough yarn, knit the hat first. Then when you're knitting the cowl, work until you have about 15 yds (14 m) of yarn left, even if you haven't finished the charted pattern, work 5 rounds of ribbing before binding off.
Both hat and cowl are about 18" (45.5 cm) circumference. The hat is 8 1/4" (21 cm) long, and the cowl is 7 1/2" (19 cm) long.
