This hat uses slipped stitches and yarn overs to create a lofty honeycomb pattern. The stitch pattern is easy to memorize and fun to work - quite addictive, really, and it is also fun to see the honeycomb pattern emerge as you work it.
The seed stitch ribbing is a step up from the usual k2/p2 rib, but is still easy to do, made up of only knit and purl stitches. It provides a very comfortable fit and a nice texture.
The honeycomb pattern is soft and stretchy, and the pattern includes three sizes, so you can make this hat for kids and adults alike. It looks great with handpainted, variegated, and speckled yarns, but the stitch pattern gives interest to solid colors, too, because of the 3-D texture.
Pattern calls for DK weight yarn (stockinette gauge 22 sts to 4"/ 10 cm).
