Lucky Duck’s a fun hat for kids and small size adults - the Large fits my 21.5" head perfectly.
It's a little complex to knit, and I recommend it for an intermediate knitter who’s comfortable working with two yarns at a time. The yellow and white background colors are worked as intarsia blocks, not stranded across the back like Fair Isle knitting. The wings and beak are joined to the hat with a 3-Needle Join. This is similar to a 3-Needle Bind Off, but the stitches remain on the needle to continue knitting. (Detailed instructions and photos are included.) The wings can be worn as ear flaps, or buttoned back. The eyes are added with duplicate stitch.
There are separate written instructions and colored charts for each size. Also included are Lucky Duck gift tags for you to print.
The samples were knit with #4 Red Heart Worsted/Aran Supersaver, but an equivalent yarn is fine. You’ll need yellow and white for the background, plus small amounts of orange (beak), green and black (eyes.).
