A friend asked me to design a panda hat for a baby, but why not hats for the entire family? Better yet, parades featuring 3 or 4 pandas encircling each head.
This detailed pattern features 7 hat sizes ranging from 3-month old babies to large adults. Separate written instructions and charts are provided for each size. The hat is a basic watch cap knit on a circular and double pointed needles with worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver®, though any similar weight can be substituted. One or 2 color yarns can be used for the background – the black and white pandas are striking on almost anyone's favorite color. I topped my hats off with pompoms using a plastic pompom maker.
IMPORTANT: The pandas are embroidered after the hat is complete. This pattern assumes a knowledge of duplicate stitch, also called knit embroidery or Swiss darning. Fair Isle amd intarsia will not work because the panda chart includes half stitches.
