These mittens were inspired by the patterns on some silver bowls found at the Sutton Hoo Ship Burial site in England. There's also a matching cowl pattern.
These fingerless mittens work up quickly with two contrasting colors of DK weight yarn. Going from a solid color of ribbing to stranded knitting, then swapping the colors and finishing up with solid ribbing gives them the feel of a fade with only two colors.
