Swatching Socks

For every knitting project I start by making a gauge swatch. There is only one except: socks! Starting a sock is as much knitting as a swatch, and I can even try it on my foot to check the fit! These socks where designed for just that case – a lovely sock yarn that you do not know the exact gauge. So you start making a stockinette toe and foot, take your gauge (and calculate some adjustments for the rest of the sock if necessary) and now you can start a pattern! In this case, the gusset increases are made purlwise on the instep and a cabled pattern, resembling shoe lacing, breaks the sometimes boring stockinette. Instead of ribbing, the cuff is worked in moss stitch.
